Intro: Our daily lives are mainly occupied by smartphones, especially Android phones. The Android operating system accounts for 72.11% of the mobile operating system market share alone. But, what if I tell you that these smartphones collect your personal data such as contacts, call records, images, passwords, etc. Google previously had several issues due to its unethical practice of stealing user data without them knowing. To overcome this issue the "e Foundation" decided to launch an Android-based operating system that is completely free of Google and its services.
What is e Operating System?
The e operating system is developed by the "e Foundation" to overcome the privacy issues on Android phones. The e Foundation is an Open source and non-profit organization. The e operating system is based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). The AOSP is an Open Source operating system developed and maintained by Google. It is based on the Linux kernel.
According to Digital Content Next – Prof. Douglas C. Schmidt, Vanderbilt University, August 2018 on average an Android phone collects 11.4 MB of data and an iPhone collects 5.7 MB of data per day. The foundation also says that they have completely removed all the Google-developed apps and replaced them with Open source alternatives. These apps look just like the traditional android applications and mimic their features. There is also no Play Store installed in the OS. But, they have their own app store. It is not loaded with all the apps available on the play store but will do the job. Otherwise, you can use the popular alternative Aurora Store.
Like the Google account, you will also get an e account with the e operating system. It is just like another Google account. This account will contain things such as an email client, cloud storage (Google drive alternative), search engine, and other online tools. The cloud storage provided here is only 1 Gigabyte. But, it is acceptable in accordance with what they are providing. You can also upgrade the storage by getting a subscription.
Supported Devices
The e operating system already supports more than 250+ smartphones. They have their own custom installer to install these ROMs so that you don't have to waste much of your time. Please note that all the latest smartphones won't be supported at the time of release because it takes some time to get the operating system ready to support each device or you can buy the Murena Phone which comes preinstalled with the e OS.
Final Thoughts
The e operating system is an amazing project. By far I've found it is the most compatible android ROM and usable out of the box. It can easily be your daily driver and get you through the whole day and you won't notice whether you are using a custom ROM. Though, it is not advised if you are new to custom android ROMs and installing them by yourself. Make sure you are installing the right image and to the right device. For the latest models, you might have to wait a little bit or you can install it on some spare phone if you want to test it out.
